How to update a subscription payment method

Updating a subscriber's payment method ensures orders continue without interruption. Customers can manage their own payment details from the portal, and merchants can make changes directly on the contract page.

Customers: update in the customer portal


  1. Open the customer subscriptions portal through your account page, email link, or store navigation. If you're unsure which link to use, see A Beginner's Guide to the Customer Subscriptions Portal to determine the correct link for your legacy or accounts portal.
  2. Open the subscription contract you wish to update
  3. Locate the Payment details card and click the Edit button.
  4. Confirm to send a secure email and follow the link provided to enter new payment information.
  5. Once completed, future subscription charges will use the new payment method.


Merchants: update from the contract page


  1. In Shopify admin go to Super Subscriptions > Contracts and select the customer’s contract.
  2. In the Payment method card, click the edit button.
  3. Select Change payment method to choose another saved method, or Send payment update email to email the customer a secure link to add a new method.
  4. Save the contract so the new payment method is used for upcoming renewals.
