How to set the price of a subscription

Not sure how to adjust the price for subscription options on your product? This step-by-step guide will walk you through different methods for editing subscription pricing to fit your business needs.

Table of contents

Method 1: Reducing the price with subscription plan discounts

Subscription plan discounts apply to every order within a subscription

One of the most common reasons for adjusting a subscription price is to offer a lower cost as an incentive for customers to start a subscription, building long-term, recurring revenue and increasing loyalty.

  1. In the Super Subscriptions app, navigate to the Plans page and select a subscription plan.
  2. Choose the relevant subscription option.
  3. Add a discount in the Discounts box.

There are 3 types of discount available to you:

  • Percentage: Apply a percentage discount to each subscription order.
  • Amount off: Deduct a specific amount from the original price.
  • Fixed price: Set a new price for the subscription.

The Fixed price discount can be set higher than the one-time purchase price of a product.

Method 2: Set up tiered pricing using product variants

You can offer different options at varying prices for your online store products by creating product variants. For guidance on setting these up, we recommend you take a look at Shopify's official guide on adding variants.

Once added, your new variants will automatically apply any discounts set up using Method 1 in this guide, based on the variant’s one-time purchase price. If you would like to apply unique discounts to each variant, you will need to create a separate subscription plan and options for each, specifying the desired discount.

Method 3: Charge for multiple orders in advance using prepaid subscriptions

Prepaid subscriptions adjust the amount a customer pays by bundling multiple subscription orders into a single payment. This setup is ideal if you want customers to commit to multiple deliveries per order, ensuring a higher minimum payment for your subscription.
