Creating a test subscription order

Testing subscription orders is essential for ensuring customers receive the correct discounts and that orders renew as expected. We strongly recommend that all merchants create at least one test subscription to fully understand the app’s functionality before going live.


This guide provides two effective methods for testing subscriptions in Shopify: using test payments and applying a 100% discount code. Each method allows you to verify subscription renewals without incurring charges. By following these steps, you will gain confidence that your subscription setup works seamlessly from initial purchase through to renewal.

Ensure you are testing payments on a development store. You cannot use real and test payments at the same time


Shopify offers a test payment feature in development stores which is ideal for testing subscriptions. This allows you to simulate orders and renewals at their original prices and observe how discounts interact with them, all without actually charging your card. It functions just like real orders, making it a valuable tool for testing.


  1. Enable Test Payments.


  1. Add your subscription product to the checkout


  1. Use the Shopify test card to create the test order:


  • Card number: 4242 4242 4242 4242
  • Expiry date: Any future date
  • CVV: Any 3 number combination


  1. Finalise the payment


Important note


Make sure not to create any shipping labels as you may be charged



Method 2. Use a 100% discount code


  1. In your Shopify admin, go to the Discounts page and click Create discount


  1. For the discount type, select Amount off orders


  1. Use the following settings to correctly set up the discount


  • Method: Code
  • Purchase type: Subscription
  • Number of payments: Applies to all recurring payments


Make sure the discount is set to Applies to all recurring payments to avoid getting charged for renewal orders


  1. Add your subscription product to the checkout and use your discount code


  1. Finalise the purchase using a real payment method
