A Beginner's Guide to Creating a Subscription Contract

Creating a subscription contract from the admin lets you start a recurring order for an existing customer without them going through checkout. This is handy for migrations or manual enrollments.



When to Use This Guide

Use this guide to:


  • Migrate subscribers from another system
  • Start a manual subscription for an existing customer
  • Add recurring orders without requiring checkout


Steps to Create a Subscription


Shopify only allows contracts to be created for customers who already have a saved payment method. New customers must check out normally before a contract can be created for them.


  1. Select a subscription option
  • Use the Subscription card to choose from your existing plans or create a custom option.
  • Open the menu (⋯) to edit the billing frequency, contract duration limits, subscription discount, or renewal dates.
  • The card summarizes order frequency, billing schedule, discount, and duration once selected.


  1. Select a customer
  • Search for an existing customer with a saved payment method.
  • Review or edit their shipping address and choose the preferred payment method.
  • You can also add an internal note for the subscription.


  1. Add a product
  • Search or browse for products to add each variant to the contract.
  • Adjust quantities, edit prices, and apply manual discounts with a reason.
  • Remove unwanted items using the trash icon next to each line.


  1. Select delivery
  • Pick a shipping rate in the Payment card: an existing rate, Free shipping, or a Custom rate where you enter the name and price.
  • Choose when the first order should be created—immediately or on a specific date.
  • Optional order-level discounts can be applied here as well.


  1. Create subscription
  • Review all changes in the Update summary card and click Create subscription to finalize.
